Tempe is a major city in the New Free Planets Alliance and the former capital of the Aktin Empire. One of the more populous cities in the continental Alliance, it is a major hub of trade and economics in the southern regions of the continent, and a major tourist spot for its historic districts and connections with the former Aktin imperial family.

The city is composed of the old city, which is surrounded by the new city, built around the old in the intervening centuries. In the center is the Imperial Palace, where the Yulias Imperial Family ruled from the founding of the city in 240 C.E. until the destruction of the empire in 1990 C.E., although the palace did not receive the title of 'Imperial' until the Proclamation of Empire in 1952 C.E. Both sections of the city sustained major damage during the Siege of Tempe, but reconstruction efforts since have repaired most of the afflicted settlements.

Tempe was first colonized at the behest of the Tehir Rinne Aoki Yulias, who had been awarded the title of tehir in exchange for his military services for the then-Aktin Kingdom. The site was located in a strategic spot near the center of his domain, and along the Shir River, which carried trade from the Tempe Terra mountains to the Great Sea to the south. It remained the capital of the Yulias family as their influence grew, becoming the royal capital once the Yulias family succeeded to the throne, and the imperial capital once the family forcibly vassalized the surrounding nations in the War of the Six Thrones from 1942-1952 C.E. The city has been sacked only once, following the Siege of Tempe during the Unification Wars, at the hands of the Allied Coalition. Following that, with the capital moved to New Heinessenpolis, Tempe became the regional capital of the state of Tempe Terra.

The city is best known for its historical importance in the Yulias' rise to power, as well as its grand architecture, reflecting the ambitions of those who resided within. As the imperial capital, it invited all manner of the rich, powerful, and famous, from the landed nobility to rich merchants and famous craftsmen. Trade has declined in recent years along the Shir River, but tourism has increased as the city recovers from the devastation of the Unification War.
